preparing you for a swimrun Adventure

What we offer

The Wanaka-XC Breca Swimrun stay is designed to cater for participants in the Breca Wanaka race - We will familiarise your team to Lake Wanaka and surrounds by swimming then running each morning - leaving you to relax and absorb the spectaular mountain surrounds of Wanaka each afternoon.  We will look after you from pick up at Queenstown airport - all you need to do is get there and we will take care of the rest.  Tim and Nicole of Wanaka-XC have a passion for swimming and trail running the mountains - and look forward to showing you the secret treasures this town has to offer. We will make your stay an unforgettable holiday experience!

What's the program?

We have put together an exciting program for your week with us. Our daily swimruns will be early, to get the most out of the day - aiming to be back at base by 11 am each day. We plan to swim and run over terrain different to race day - leaving that day as an unexplored adventure. We will point out the race day route and transitions as we pass them during the week - so you will be familiar with them. During our swimruns we can provide you with a swim and running technique review.

Our stay includes all meals - breakfast, lunch and dinner with the exception of one evening.

Our professional masseur will give you a massage before or after race day - its all part of the program!

Your afternoons are free and flexible - we can transport you the attractions available and provide information to help you decide on what to do.

Our daily swimruns will be early, to get the most out of the day - being back at base by 11 am each day. You can choose to lunch in town or prepare your own from supplies we provide at the Krook (our base). Your afternoons are free and flexible. We'll help you get the most of the outstanding area around Wanaka and can arrange transport to any of its attractions.

Monday 11 Mar 
Pick up at 1 pm from Queenstown Airport
Pick up from either Queenstown airport or CBD. Transport by Wanaka XC bus to Wanaka. Time to settle in to your base for the week.
Meet and greet Nicole & Tim of Wanaka XC and your fellow Breca competitors. We will take you up a spectacular walk - Mt Iron.  Enjoy sunset over the lake and a bird's eye view of the Breca Wanaka course.
Tuesday 12 Mar 
Lake swim + run.
Swim in picturesque and sheltered Roys Bay followed by a 4 km run along the Clutha River to Albert Town.  A stunning way to get acclimatised!

Wednesday 13 Mar 
Boat swim
Stevensons Island swim + run
Our boat will take you from Wanaka and on a relaxing trip to Stevensons Island, which the Breca Wanaka competitors will visit during the race. Enjoy a 4 km swim around the island and take in the magnificent sights. On the return leg you have the option of a drop off for a 5 km run home.
At your leisure. Each afternoon a team can choose to have their individual massage - we will book this in with you when you arrive.
Thursday 14 Mar 
Bay swim
Dublin Bay swim + run
Starting from Parkins Bay, an exhilarating 2 km swim to Mount Aspiring view point, from there enjoy a great run home (options up to 10 km) on the Millenium Track..
Visit Wanaka's evening market and a team drink at Speights Ale House before making  your own way for dinner at town.
Friday 15 Mar
Race taper
Ruby Island swim
Today we'll be winding down the effort and conserving energy ready for tomorrow's event. We'll take a short swim to Ruby Island - which is a great recon for the final stage of the race.
Wanaka XC will take you to event registration and safety brief at Edgewater Hotel - great chance to meet fellow competitors!
Saturday 16 Mar

The focus of the week. Wanaka XC will make sure your race day is a smooth as possible. We'll take care of you in the morning and ensure you and your race bags are dropped off by the necessary times.  We'll also see you on the course for support.  
After the race, we'll whisk you home for a shower and recovery before getting you back to the race presentation.

Recovery and sightseeing
Leisurely swim downriver
A fun swim from Beacon Point to the Clutha River - only as far as you'd like to go!
Soak up the sun from the gorgeous balcony of our base, while enjoying a glass of local wine. What better way to end the Wanaka XC luxury event stay.
Monday 18 Mar
Check out at 10 am
Drop off at Queenstown Airport @ 11 am
We will transport you to Queenstown Airport by 11:00 am  in plenty of time for most outbound flights. We can also drop you off in Queenstown CBD.

How cold is the water?

Summer water temperatures in Lake Wanaka average at 17.5 degrees and can be up to 19 degrees. A wetsuit is compulsory item for all Breca competitors and it needs to be suitable for temperatures down to 10C.


Your safety is paramount. We will have kayak / SUP support on all swims which will be conducted along the shore line in all instances.  We will provide high visibility swimming buoys for all swimmers to ensure we know where everyone is at any given time. All swims will be subject to suitable weather conditions - which, as we are in the mountains, can change plans. We'll make the best of the conditions and reserve the right to modify the program as required.

How far will we swimrun each day?

We have planned the swimruns to acclimatise you to the lake and surrounds, while not spoiling your race day adventure.  We will take you to different parts of the lake,  pointing out where your race route traverses. The average daily swimrun will be 2-3 hours in duration - but we taper down in the days before the event.
